Net Worth March 2009
A very interesting net worth month for me. As you can see below, my savings are way up which is a good thing considering the state of my investment numbers.

The savings bump is thanks to my 2008 bonus from work. I was pretty happy that those had not been cut. When or if I will see one again is anyone's guess in this economy.

The retirement accounts continue to be battered by the market. I am still investing every month in my 401(k) and those new dollars continue to be eclipsed by falling share prices.

I also adjusted my real estate values since a couple of comparable sales in my neighborhood finally gave me some real data to work with. I am hoping interest rates will continue to fall and I can refinance in the near future. If that happens, I will have an appraisal to see if my new valuation is low or high.

Otherwise, things keep chugging along. $15 come in this month from online surveys. I also received some nice gifts and was treated to a few meals thanks to a birthday. I am still working on my taxes. Hopefully I can get those completed soon.

You're so brave. I couldn't bring myself to update my NW spreadsheet this weekend. I knew it was going to be bad because of the horrendous week last week. After today, I'm worried that March is going to be lion for more than the bad weather.

These are indeed scary times, I have no idea whether the medium-term future will see substantial deflation, substantial inflation, or deflation followed by inflation. Nobody else seems to know either. I want to protect myself and my wife from all those possibilities, but of course the things one does to protect oneself against deflation and the things one does to protect oneself against deflation are nearly exact opposites!

    matt,
curious about your comment. What are the different things you would do to protect against deflation and how is it different from protecting against inflation?

You note that you are still adding to your 401(k). Have you adjusted the percentage taken from your paycheck?
