| Examples of food spending from three families |
The Boston Globe takes A look at 3 households food costs. ILANA GREENSTEIN AND MANUEL MACIAS
AGES: 38 and 47
LIVE IN: East Boston with children Jesse, 4, and Izel, 1.
OCCUPATION: Attorneys
COST OF GROCERIES ON A RECENT WEEK: about $400
SHOP AT: Whole Foods.
STAPLES: Shrimp, red meat once a week, peas, fruit, sweet potatoes, rice, organic milk, organic yogurt.
SPEND THE MOST ON: Lamb, shrimp, fruit. Seeing how much more organic shopping is than a regular grocery store make me wonder if stores like Whole Foods are losing customers? |

I have a high school friend with multiple allergies and for their family they is no substitute for organic and natural foods. For me, I still shop organic. Soy milk prices have gone up but the milk lasts longer than regular milk which translates to less trips to the store. Also, I'm hooked to the flavor. Some organics have such a significantly different and better taste that its hard to imagine going back to the regular brands just over price. I've noticed though that the store I go to the most often is offering cheaper brands for some categories. For example I was buying soap yesterday and I could have spend anywhere from 60 cents to $6 a bar. Its nice to see the store responding and thinking about the customer.

Another example of poor reporting by the Globe. Anybody who shops at Shaw's and Stop & Shop needs to be showing a better than 50% savings after coupons and store card savings or needs to seriously consider switching to Market Basket or another true discount grocery. There is a reason why Whole Foods is nicknamed "Whole Paycheck" and if you shop there don't complain about high prices or how your middle class income can't afford it. It is clearly a store targeted at the wealthy. I take serious issue with labeling "Diet Coke" a staple for the second family. It has as much nutritional value as a pack of Marlboros...
