I just need to pay the mortgage. - The Yuppie Nuremberg defense
I have been battling flu-like symptoms for the last couple of days and this weekend finally admitted that I am sick and have been spending a lot of quality time on the couch or in bed watching tv and movies. Tonights featured movie was the satire Thank You for Smoking which I found enjoyable to watch - but I don't really want to do a review. Instead I wanted to talk about this line from the movie:
I just need to pay the mortgage.

The Yuppie Nuremberg defense.
Which is how the main character in the movie describes how he can justify his job as a lobbyist for big tabacco. He could have just said he was doing it for the money - but by phrasing it as "for the mortgage" gives it more legitamacy.

Now my job is not of the soul destroying kind and definately would not place me in the MOD club (Merchants of Death) but I do sometimes feel like I work for my mortgage. But if I could pay off my mortgage tomorrow I couldn't stop working - I would then feel the pressure of working for my retirement fund.

But if I did have a MOD job could I use the phrase - I just need to fund my retirement account as my yuppie Nuremberg defense? What is your main motivator for working - your yuppie Nuremberg defense?

I am off to do another shot of Nyquil and put myself out of my misery for a few hours at least (I hope).

Im sorry your not feeling well. I cant tell you how well coldfx works. being a nurse in canada, it doesnt prevent a cold but shortens the life of it. just a suggestion. I must say i havent seen a winter like this...ever! Thinking wishfully of sunshine! o yes and paying off the mortgage. (that is why I brushed off my car and plow down snow covered roads every day!)

You are correct that once you pay off the mortgage, you still have to work!! Our mortgage is paid off but there are still property taxes, homeowner's insurance, home repairs, power bills, etc to pay. And then, of course, there is saving for retirement.

    Hope you feel better soon!

I just need to fund my assisted living fund...

I know this sucks -- I am NOT living for today, I am living for what I'm afraid my tomorrow might be like.

I don't know if "paying the mortgage" really holds up as a defense for doing immoral things. It is true everyone has to make a living to put a roof over their heads - but what kind of roof justifies this? Does the poor inner city kid get to use this defense for dealing drugs? Or is it just the upper-middle-class suburban whiteman dabbling in white collar-esque crime?

    I hope you feel better!

I'd still have to work to pay all the stuff Wendy mentioned, but mostly I'd need to work for the health insurance. (Unless one of our esteemed candidates can solve that problem in '09...)

Hey BG - I was not feeling great either this weekend - "Bridget Jones" was my movie of choice ...

At this point, I'm just working to pay off the bills but I'm lucky in that, for today, I love my job. Still going to build that fund so that, should the day come that I no longer love my job, I have options.

Am I allowed to use the Yuppie Nuremberg Defense?

I work for a health insurance company- but I am one of the good guys there. I am a case management nurse-- I get to occasionally allow for coverage of service or items not usually covered with reasonable justification.

My defense would be something like: "I need regular working hours due to my kids and as a nurse, the choices become limited."

I just accepted another ad for my blog from a payday loan company. Both of my current direct sponsors are cash advance companies.

I was thinking of writing a post with what you're calling a Nuremberg defense--I need to take money from companies I hope my readers won't use because I need to pay the bills.

But I decided, what the hell. Some PF blogger, I forget who, once said she accepts ads from all comers because she's "not a babysitter" and her readers can think for themselves. I guess I like that logic, rather than making it all about why I need the money.

    I guess mine is:

student loans (though I could have chosen NOT to do the MBA of course)

    retirement

    supporting my looking-for-work husband

and saving to help take care of my family (Dad is retiring soon and I have one brother still in college, and one who never went--so is working 'odd' jobs.)

    Feel better, Boston Gal!!

Everyone has their reasons and motivations to do what they do. The best of us actually live our lives according to the morals we say we have. The rest of us hope that talking about being moral and having values is enough to overshadow our actions.

At some point you have to realize that either you are part of the solution, or part of the problem. I believe a great deal of us, because of the actions we choose to execute of our own free will (sorry, no one "needs" a mortgage) on daily basis...are a majority of the problem. And it's easier to ignore it, make excuses, and maintain the status quo than actually do something about it. It's a conflict and apathy I believe a lot of us are stuck in.

The hip jobs arms race has gone too far if someone feels like she has to claim the "Nuremberg Defense" for working as a nurse for a health-care company, even in jest!

Does the world really need another marginally talented graphic designer?
