PBS NOW: 49 UP and Living Off the Grid
This weeks episode of the PBS show NOW had two very interesting segments. Michael Apted on "49 Up" interviewed the director of the long running documentary "UP" series. Back in 1963 film makers interviewed a group of 7 year old British children from vastly different socioeconomic classes, then they went back and reinterviewed them every 7 years there after. This is the 7th documentary film in the series and the children are now 49 year old adults. 49UP will air next week on P.O.V (in Boston it will air on Channel 2 at 9PM on Tuesday October 9, 2007).

The original 1963 documentary was inspired by the Jesuit quote: "Give me the child until he is seven, and I'll give you the man." The documentary series asks the question - can you really see the adult in the seven year old child? The children chosen by the film makers were from the extremes of the Britich class system - privledge, well educated, upper class children and disadvantaged, poorly educated, lower class children. Seeing how they have progressed in their lives is fascinating, but as Michael Apted himself has said, not including middle-class children in the series was a mistake. It would have been interesting to see how children in the middle would have progressed as well.

The NOW episode also includes a segment on some families in Iowa who are living "Off the Grid" and producing power for their homes using solar panels and wind turbines.

I saw the whole series (up to 42 up) on Netflix... An excellent series. It's amazing how people and their lives change. Excited to see the next installation of it. Thanks!
