| Penny Pinching Benefits One Blogger |
NPR.org aired this brief little snippet: Penny Pinching Benefits One Blogger While it talks a bit about how Dawn Meehan went from stay-at-home mom blogger to landing a book deal, a screenplay and a TV series - it does not really capture how fast success has found her.
Dawn has the popular blog: BECAUSE I SAID SO, but her success did not really start with the blog. It began with an Ebay auction, a cleverly written auction ad, and a destructive baseball. Her auction post was so witty and struck a cord with the 220,000 people who read it, that it not only fetched $1,125.00 for the baseball, but also made Dawn realize she had a talent for writing. This prompted her to start the blog and to use her well written Ebay posting to drive more traffic to the blog (and generate some advertising income).
But this Chicago Tribune article: Fans, offers pour in as mom of 6 makes light of life on blog points out, her blog has become much more than just a way to earn a bit of extra money. She is in the midst of becoming successful, wealthy, and famous - all from some late night posts typed on an old computer in the corner of her bedroom. Meehan started a blog June 29. She was getting about 10 visits a day. On Aug. 17, she decided she might get more traffic if she shared another funny story of modern motherhood on eBay -- the story of her buying Pokemon cards unknowingly after her children sneaked them in the cart during grocery-shopping.
"I would rather swim, covered in bait, through the English Channel ... than take my six kids to the grocery store," Meehan wrote in the auction entry. "There comes a time, however, when you're peering into your fridge and thinking, 'Hmmm, what can I make with ketchup, Italian dressing, and half an onion...'"
Again, response was explosive -- 14,000 online visits in four days. People asked if she had a blog, and she directed them there.
As of Friday, visits to www.mom2my6pack.blogspot.com, were numbering close to 100,000 a day. People from nearly 70 countries have registered as "buddies" on her blog.
Since that Aug. 17 posting, publishers, a TV producer, magazine editors and a pop culture online magazine coordinator have asked her to write for them. Literary agents have offered their representation. Amazing how sometimes success just finds you...Labels: Frugal Females |
