| Knowing how long things should last |
Recently I was presented with one of those interesting little life dilemmas which can occur. After a wonderful day of sightseeing, I had returned to a rented vacation home and was making lunch for myself when that dilemma occurred. This was not my kitchen and the item I was about to coat my sandwich with was not something I had purchased. No clear expiration or other date could be found on the jar. Do I recklessly flavor my sandwich and hope nothing adverse happens or do I play it safe and enjoy a blander meal?
Well I went the reckless route and survived to blog about it today. But it does bring up a serious question - how long do things really last? This Real Simple article: Surprising Expiration Dates gives a nice breakdown on the expected longevity of most items you can find in your pantry or fridge.
I was really surprised by the short expiration date of bleach - only 3 - 6 months? The bleach under my kitchen sink was purchased 3 years ago when I moved into this house! Knowing that my whites may not come out of the machine as white as they could because I used old bleach is not as worrisome as eating something that perhaps should not be eaten. |

Actually, manufacturers may put an expiry date as they want - I mean, the earlier a product gets out of the usage date the more money a costomer spend on another one. Besides, all those conservants and preservatives keep products fresh for long.
