| Finding time in a busy day to save a life |
The CareerJournal.com article: Leaving the Office To Use the Jaws of Life profiles 40 year old Joe Anderson who juggles a demanding career as a national accounts manager at Nationwide Financial Services Inc, a family, and volunteering for emergency-rescue work. "My daughter Meghan, 6, is proud of my rescue work. There are times when my pager will go off and she'll say, 'Daddy, there's a rescue call.' We were driving up to the mall and the car in front of us had an accident. Meg said, 'Dad, put the (emergency) lights on and go do what you have to do.' I said, 'You OK with that, Meg?' And she said, 'Go take care of the people. Mommy and I will be fine.'
Some days, I call this work a gift. Some days I call it a curse. I don't go to church every week, but I do my penance every time my pager goes off. The truth is, I have a very fortunate life. I have a great job, I have a great family. If I can give a little bit back every now and again, then I feel like I'm doing my part. If everybody did just a little bit, the world would be a better place." |
