We have the tools for retirement
CareerJournal.com reports: U.S. Workers Are Encouraged To Plan Retirement, Poll Shows So employers are doing their part making the retirement options available.
Those with more education are in jobs that offer a greater variety of financial-planning and retirement-preparation opportunities and incentives, the poll indicates. For example, 33% of employed respondents who are college graduates said their employer matches contributions to a 401(k) plan, compared with 16% of those with high-school education or less. And a quarter of college grads are invited to financial or retirement-planning workshops, versus 8% of those with less education.
It is true that every employer I have worked for as an adult has had some sort of retirement plan I could participate in (mostly offered me a 401(k) option) and it is also true I have mostly not taken full advantage of the programs.

This is the first year I will try to contribute the maximum allowable in my 401(k). While having access to these programs is half the battle - the other half - being able to afford to take full advantage of them - is also a challenge.

It always seems harder to save the pre-tax money (401k) than the after-tax (eg Roth). Perhaps it's the fear that if you deduct too much pre-tax, you won't have enough for necessities with your take home.

This seems to be my problem. I've been slowly raising my witholdings, but it's scarier going up 4% than dropping $4,000 in a Roth.

Congrats, Boston Gal, on maxing out your 401(K) this year. That's my goal for next year.

I'm glad to see all the retirement articles, too. But I have to wonder - are these articles preaching to the choir? All of us who read finance blogs listen to the advice, but I do wonder how much of it gets through to the masses.
