Micro Turbines
This CNN.com video The Green Inventor takes a look at some clever inventions by Lucien Gamberota. His micro wind turbines fit easily on a rooftop. A small apartment would need about 60 of these turbines and would cost about $100 (according to the story).

The report peaked my interest enough to start searching around to see if Micro Turbines are available in the US. So far I have not found a definitive answer, but I did come across some useful information about wind turbines for residential homes. These are not practical for my densely populated neighborhood, but others might find it interesting.

For more information about "Small Wind" in the US visit the American Wind Energy Association website.

$100? I wish it were that simple. I admit it does look like a great design, but I suspect once you add in the middle men, the installers, the safety regulations, the utilities fighting it, royalties (it's going to be patented, right?), and more, this would cost you a few thousand to get a system like it installed. If this ever is available in the U.S. I would love to see how much it costs.
