| Indian-Americans book years of success |
The USAToday article: Indian-Americans book years of success takes a look at an industry increasingly dominated by Indian-American owners - smaller hotels. In the 1970s, Indians began buying budget motels because they could get them cheaply and viewed them as a safe investment. They often saved money by living in their motels. Limited-service hotels were particularly attractive to owners because most were Hindus. Many Hindus are vegetarians, and they didn't have to serve meat as they might have to in some full-service hotels.
By being frugal, employing family members and doing grinding chores themselves, many Indian-Americans have been able to save aggressively and have cash to invest. Rising real estate prices over the years have raised their net worth substantially. I found it an interesting twist on the small landlord story. In New England many immigrants (and other savvy folks) buy two or three family homes - live in one unit and rent out the others. These Indian-American immigrants take that model to small hotels. They live onsite and run the business. Pretty clever. |

This is so true. I know 2 Indian families that own Super 8 hotels in Mississippi. They also live in the hotel. They employ 1 housekeeper and one maitenance man. They run the front desk and serve cereal and hot coffe and donuts every morning to their guests. Very low maintenence. The smartest thing is that their children ( 2nd generation)form companies and continue the hotel business on a higher scale. Very smart people!

Indian Americans have shown great business acumen here in the US. if only, such brilliant souls weren't shackled by Nehruvian Socialism back home; India would have been more prosperous.

This brings me back to my college days. On trips to Atlantic City my buddies and I would haggle with the Indian budget motel owners in Absecon, NJ just outside the city. Lowest rate in AC was $180 a night. We'd stop at a motel ask what the rate was, usually around $50. Invariably we'd say it was too much and walk out. 9/10 times the guy would come running after offering cheaper rates. We usually took him up on $35-$40 and packed 6 of us in the room.
