| Loss of Teen Paperboys is loss to our economy? |
Yet another eagle eyed reader has tipped me to a fascinating article (you guys are making me one very well read Gal!) The Knowledge@Wharton article: Why Teens Aren't Finding Jobs, and Why Employers Are Paying the Price suggests some dire economic outcomes for the US if we don't start finding ways to give teens on-the-job experience. "We often ask, 'What's wrong with this generation? They don't have any work ethic?' but a deeper analysis shows they haven't had the same employment opportunities their parents and older siblings once had," says Neil Sullivan, executive director of the Boston Private Industry Council, a business-led intermediary organization that seeks to strengthen Boston's workforce. As a result, employers are finding that entry-level employees are lacking in what Sullivan calls "the habits of paid work." |

A bit related to the topic - where are the neighborhood kids who want to earn some money? My neighbor asked if there was anything her 12 yr old son could do for some money. I have lots of small jobs - take out the trash weekly, help paint a fence, shovel snow. The kid did trash for a few weeks and now does it only sporadically. He started painting and had to be cajolled back to finish. Maybe he's just too young to be reliable.
