| MA auto insurance rates are going down - so why am I unhappy? |
It's official, according to this Boston Globe article: State OK's big auto rate cut. Massachusetts, the only state where regulators set auto rates, has dropped the average premium by 9.6 percent.
Last year, I was happily announcing the 8.7% rate cut - so why am I so unhappy with this years announcement? Because my car insurance bill renews in February: The new rates will take effect April 1 instead of Jan. 1 and last a year. The effective date was moved so insurers could send final bills to all their customers. Previously, insurers had to send provisional bills to customers renewing policies early in the year and later send them final bills.
Drivers renewing policies before April 1 will be charged at 2006 levels until they renew in 2008. Yes, because of that change, I will not be receiving a nice rebate check in the mail this year like I did last year: The Mailman delivered Money yet again!
Now, if I was only expecting a few dollars difference it would not be such a big deal. But as you can see I received a BIG rebate last year. I was expecting another hefty one this year since I will hit the 6 year incident free mark AND was hoping for the further reduction. Instead I will have to wait until 2008. :( |

Actually, you could always switch insurance carriers once the new rates go into effect. That way you can take advantage of the rate decrease, keep your diving record in tact and you don't have to wait till 2008.
