Customizing my closets
Businessweek.com's article: A $40,000 Home for Your Clothes has me drooling over customized closets. I have three main closets in my portion of the house. Since I rent out my basement, these closets need to accommodate all of my "stuff". They do a good job now, but with some improvements they could hold a lot more. Currently the closets are your standard reach-in type with a single bar for hanging and a shelf above that. I would love to add more shelves, drawers, and tiered hanging space.

My home improvement dollars need to stretch to accommodate a number of different projects around the house. That means I would be looking for the less expensive customized closet solutions. The $400 closet is more in line with my budget, not the $40,000 one!

I drool over the sight of organized closets. They make everything appear so organized and efficient.

Once you get started, I look forward to reading about your home improvement projects.

I think Consumer REports has done some ratings on which closet systems are teh best for the money. Even if you don't use those, it's easy for a handyman to install two-tiered poles and some simple extra shelves. I had a set up like that in my old studio, and added some removable folding shelves of my own and it made all the difference in being able to squeeze a ton of stuff into a small space.

I got a simple cloth shelving unit from Ikea that velcros onto the hanging rod in my closet. I was worried that if I loaded it down with blue jeans and sweaters the velcro wouldn't hold, but it's been great. It has maybe five shelves in it, hangs almost to the floor, and has made it so I can get away with not replacing my too-small dresser for a few more years.

Go to the Ikea site, click on "secondary storage" in the left menu, then select "clothes organizers", again in the left menu.
