Staples suit resolved by classy action
Today's Boston Globe article: Staples suit resolved by classy action reports that Staples handed out 13% more vouchers last month than it was required to under a class-action settlement. It was good that Staples kept handing out those vouchers, but frankly, it would have been a bit of a relations nightmare if they tried to deny customers the vouchers later in the day.

I was one of those happy customers last month who received $7.50 worth of free Staples merchandise courtesy of the voucher. I was glad the settlement actually benefited the customers rather than just the lawyers. Staples was wrong, they admitted it, and now they have paid for it. It may have cost them a bit more than anticipated, but they made their customers happy.

It may have ended up as a slighter better win for the customer this time, but I am sure the good will Staples generated from "Customer Day" will make this a bigger win for them in the long-run.

I also stopped by that day, and was a little taken aback by being greeted with "happy consumer day," when I was given the voucher.

It made it appear that Staples had just decided to be nice to its customers, rather than compensate people for their failure to follow the law. I watched people get the vouchers and look completely puzzled about why they were getting them. It was pretty smart of Staples, but didn't feel quite honest.
