| *Sigh* - I infringed on a trademark... |
| Well, along with my recent bit of fame courtesy of the New York Times, I have managed to capture the attention of a company which states that it owns the trade mark to the name "Jane Dough". Obeying the "friendly" cease and desist order I am removing the name Jane Dough from my blog and replacing it with "Boston Gal". Hopefully this will end my career of trademark infringement and I can go back to being a law abiding personal finance blogger :) |

Bummer that was a wicked good name for you.

I wonder if there are any real-life "Jane Dough"s. If so, shame on parents for giving their children trademarked names!
I'm sorry you've run into this trouble, I suppose it's a slippery slope situation allowing for no exceptions.
-
Yes, I am in mourning for my old name tonight. I have been hiding behind it for almost a year now. I remember when I was filling out the template for my blog and instead of typing my initial pseudonym "Jane Doe" I modified the last name to be a bit clever given the financial focus of the blog.
Oh well, I am learning to embrace "Boston Gal" as a full identity...

Was it these people? I've never seen so many "TM's" on one website. They seem paranoid...
-
Hi Jane, I ran into a similar problem when I set up the domain Rolex Watch Leasing...What the heck was I thinking? Great blog!
-
You will always be Ms. Dough to me!!

Seriously; that "Columns" section is an eyesore.
-
Thanks Guys!
I am feeling the love tonight :)
I wish I could confirm your guess Flexo, but I would not want to be accussed of defaming anyone - but lets just say the people in question have nothing to do with baking and quite a lot to do with investing...
I will let you decide if Flexo was correct in his guess...
-
A special kudos to the folks over at NetWorthIQ who responded super quick to my request for a username change from janedough to bostongal - you guys rock!
-
Wow! Seriously... paranoid much?! Some of the titles they have trademarked are like, practically common use sayings.
But TM or not you'll always be Jane Dough!
As hard as that is to top, have you considered variations? Maybe Lane Dough... Or an entirely new financial pseudonym like Annie Affluence, Betty Bankroll, etc. LOL

As the pf blogging community grows bigger and bigger I think we will run into more of these issues. Something to definitely be mindful of - luckily it wasn't much of a stretch for you to go to Boston Gal!
-
That's lame. Doesn't the NYT having anything better to do?

Hi Layne,
I know, I know, I should have put more thought into a new name - but frankly I was hit with this after a long day at work. Who can be creative on a Monday night? A lot of Emails and comments already address me as "Boston Gal" and given the blog name it just seemed easier to go with that.
But thanks for all the supportive comments - perhaps I should have a little ceremony to bring closure to this thing... Write my old blog identity name on a piece of toilet paper and flush it? Or perhaps put it in a shoebox and bury it in the backyard?
The mourning continues in my humble abode here in Boston....

Jane Dou.. I mean... Boston Gal, You mean that wasn't your real name?!!
No Joking, no matter who you call yourself, keep up the good blogging.
-
humorless corporations! your site is still better than theirs. HA!
-
They trademarked "Casual Fridays?" Good grief!
-
that $uck$! guess what?!
you now get to prey on anyone that introduces herself "i am a boston gal."
quick now, copyright that name before someone else gets a bright idea! maybe you can use 'bo$ton gal' ...
- s.b.
-
if it was the site noted by flexo, one would think they would be Googling (and yes, I know Google does not like their name used as a verb) their TMs to see if there were others out there...
in any case, congrats on the publicity, Notorious B.G.O.W. ;)
-
It's just as well. I've been calling you Boston anyway. I like the anonymous idea of calling yourself "Bo$ton".
-
lame, lame, lame, lame. sorry, just sharing my stream of thinking...
-
Maybe you can change the spelling of your name to Jayne Dough. Or is that copyrighted as well?
-
That's really quite sad. It occurred to me that Boston Gal is likely trademarked as well though. I would have even said more likely than Jane Dough.
-
well that sucks, i thought it was a perfect name. You can look up trademarks at governments trademark registry to see if names are being used, here's the link:

Oh pooh. I'll have to do something about all my JD references. Too bad I can't do a mass substitute in Blogger. (Doubtful I can do it in WordPress either.)
Sorry they are being stinky doo-doo heads about trademark infringement. I think it's pretty well-established that you are you and doing this on your own.
-
That is too bad. Not that it's picky, but with that Trademark and from the USPTO site, isn't there an "Ask" in front so wouldn't that be different from just "Jane Dough"?
Also, too bad you didn't start blogging before they TM'ed it.
-
How do we know you are an ordinary person vs. a marketer for the businesses you mention?
-
Um...
Not sure how to answer that. I don't work in marketing. I am just a woman with a blog. However, how could I "prove" this to you? I don't think I can.
-
how can you trademark a name?? thats stupid.
Even worse that getting a patent for 1 click shopping!
