| Organize the cash in your wallet - it saves time AND money! |
I was standing in line, waiting my turn to pay for my lunch, when I couldn't help but notice the person in front of me fumbling with the cash in their wallet. Folded and crumpled bills came tumbling onto the counter. The cashier and the customer both grabbing at them before they fell onto the floor. It seemed to take forever for the two to smooth out the bills and count the amount in hand. Of course it was not enough and the customer ended up fishing back into her back to find a couple more dollars.
My inner-papergirl was tsk, tsk, tsking at this display of unorganized money chaos. Having had to deal early with cash, I learned to always store my bills in a neat stack, with like-kind bills next to like-kind bills in descending order. When I reach into my wallet I know where to find my ones vrs. my twenties. It only takes a moment to organize your cash. It saves time and you are less likely to mistakenly hand-over an incorrect bill when paying for something.
If you are someone who does not organize their cash - take a moment after reading this post, reach into your pocket, wallet, handbag, etc. - take all your bills out and organize them. Ah, don't you feel better now? I know I do and believe me the person standing in line behind you at the cashier counter will feel a lot better as well! :) |

You remind me of monica in friends when you say you arrange them chronologically. phew!!! i keep them pretty neat but the 1's after the 5's after the 10's, nope that's not for me. although, i admire your organizing skills :)

There is actually a good reason why I do that Life Lover. When I used to collect money on my paper route I would have to take the wad of money in and out of my pocket over and over.
If I had a bunch of crumpled bills in my pocket I would likely lose some when I was constantly reaching in and out of my pockets.
So I learned early to keep all my bills in a neat stack folder in half. The order of the bills also came from having to give change so often. You keep the ones on the outside edge and the higher bills on the inside. This also meant that when I was unfolding the stack you always saw the ones - so I was not flashing the larger bills.

This post cracked me up. The bills in my wallet are organized numerically (I am pretty sure that chronologically has to do with TIME. Therefore, I do not have them arranged in the order in which they were received! ;-) ). I just wish that there were more bills for me to keep organized. With my pathetic bankroll, it is not that hard to keep a few bills in order.
My boss' boss, on the other hand, is the woman you describe from the store. Worst part is that she has $50s and $100s coming out of pockets/pocketbook in a crumpled up state. My boss tells the story of the two of them in Vegas and her boss trying to find a few small bills for a tip and just continually pulling crumpled up $50s and $100s out of her pockets (guess that was one of the times she won big!). My boss was embarrassed. I laughed - and thought that I would just like to be around the lady when the bills started raining down around her!

At my dad's gas station he had a full service pump for a long time. To this day, he still organizes his money the same way that he did then. (We're talking fat wads of easily $300-500)
He puts all all his cash in order of denomination, then he takes a small stack of ones, and puts them on the back side of the twenties so it looks like the whole stack is just singles. He's done this for 30 years. It works for him.
I don't do exactly the same thing since I rarely have more than $20 in cash on my person. But when I have $200, I always do the thing my pop told me to do, which is to make it look like I have only dollar bills.

yeah i do that too. didn't always, but at some point i found it is much easier (& more accurate) to handle transactions that way. also, easier to take a quick inventory. and if it happens to be a bare pile, the lower bills on the outside of course.

I am an absolute cash organizing fiend. My fastidiousness drives my wife a tad crazy but keeps me sane and at the ready for whipping out my cash in expected and unexpected times. This manner of maintaining my cash alludes to more than just convenience but aesthetic pleasure as well. I do enjoy a descending numerically organized wad of cash to cash chaos.

I worked at the college bookstore, and we had to have our cash trays organized with all the money facing the same way--basically facing face-side up, with the eyes at the top (in terms of Lincoln, Franklin, etc.) To this day I'm compulsive about keeping my cash like that, although to be honest, I carry very very little cash, almost never write checks, and do almost everything by debit card or credit card or automatic bill-pay/check-writing
