Host a Movie Night?
Today's Boston Globe has a great story: Now playing on the big supermarket wall about a renter who turned a negative (a view of a large blank brick wall) into a positive - by hosting movie nights in his yard.

It is an economical way to entertain a group of friends and has introduced him to his neighbors. I love hearing stories like this - one of the great things about living in the city is your proximity to so many different people - yet so few take the time to get to know their neighbors. It is hard to establish a common bond with folks you don't know. In the suburbs people tend to meet through their children. In the city you tend to meet when helping each other shovel out your cars after blizzards (at least that is when I tend to meet my neighbors...)

Turning lemons into lemonade! I like that. I meet my neighbors in the elevator and the laundry room. Most seem pretty nice even if you're cheesed off at them for not picking up their laundry faster.

I love this! I recall that a few years ago someone in my neighborhood (Jamaica Plain) projected some movie up on the side of a garage. I hope this kind of thing goes on and on.

There might be copyright issues if you don't have performance rights. Check with the library, they have some of those videos.

Generally there is nothing wrong with airing a film. It's whether or not you are charging admission to see it where there is a problem with rights, etc. Everyone needs to get their cut of royalties once money is involved.

My college friends ran the film screening club and they used to put a large sail up on the quad and show films. I believe the only complaint received was when they showed Pulp Fiction. Some of the neighbors around the school didn't appreciate the profanities wafting through the air on the loudspeakers.

actually, anon is right about the need for public performance rights. A common misconception about copyright law is that if money is not exchanged, you're in the clear.
