| Gambling for Good? |
Today's Boston Globe has the story: A car? Trips? Schools raffle off grand prizes. I have a LOT of nieces and nephews and am always being asked to buy wrapping paper, popcorn, candy, cookies, etc. to support their schools (or activities). I cheerfully plunk my money down and buy the stuff knowing I sold the same to my Aunts and Uncles when I was young. If I have multiples all selling the same product I ask to just write a check to the school for the amount I would have spent (I really don't need 10 boxes of popcorn). I am glad none of my nieces or nephews lives in any of these towns - I could not afford to buy multiples of these raffle tickets. Forget about $1 raffle tickets for restaurant gift certificates. Brookline recently charged $100 per ticket for a chance to win a Mini Cooper, Belmont auctioned off a luxury vacation at a resort near Vail, and Winchester will host a gala this June -- at $500 a ticket. |
