Bargain Hunting yet again...
If you live in Massachusetts you have probably heard of Building 19 or at least seen the quirky cartoonish black and white ads in the Sunday paper. What does this store sell you might ask? Here is the explanation from the website:
Building #19, Inc. retails insurance salvage, bankruptcy stocks, irregulars, railroad salvage, mail order returns, close-outs and other off-price "goodies". An affiliated company, B.N.S. Re-Apportioners Inc., wholesales any surplus or overstocks.

Now, if you think CostCo or BJ's is too raw and lacking in ambiance, forget Building 19. Each of the stores locations tend to be in older fringe areas. The parking lots do away with such niceties as solid pavement or parking lines. If you see people driving erratically through a Building 19 parking lot it is because they are trying to avoid all the potholes - generally a fruitless effort.

Once you manage to park and get inside you may notice the large blue tarps suspended from the ceiling with hoses and trash barrels underneath. Building 19 saves money buy just "tarping and catching" leaks instead of actually fixing the roofs.

However, if you can look beyond all of this you will find some great bargains. This store sells everything. The monthly circulas (which you should really check out - they are very funny) highlight the new bargains they have acquired. But certain items are always there. Building 19 is THE place to get oriental rugs. Yup - if you are about to invest some thousands of dollars in a hand-knotted rug, do yourself a favor and look in Building 19 first. They also have less expensive machine made orientals. It was the rugs that brought me there. Now that I have some new living room furniture, I guess it is time to get a rug for my living room. I have just the hardwood floor there now. While I flipped through dozens of rugs at Building 19 I could not make up my mind. So walked out empty handed. But I have a feeling I will be back...

Totally! I was starting to read your post and thinking that the place has pros and cons but was really great were the deals on rugs...LOL

I have definitely picked up both great find and some useless junk there (in my earlier, more clutter-filled, days) but they have such a great selection of rugs and really nice prices too.

    Great Boston bargain tip!

I've lived in Boston for 20 years, and I've never found anything, other than rugs, worth buying at Building 19. But I keep going back.
