Cost of celebrating Thanksgiving
I have just totaled up my expenses for Thanksgiving weekend:

$25.39 - Tank of gas for trip to Vermont
$ 2.40 - tolls
$41.82 - groceries for pie and side dish I made for the meal + diet coke & car snacks
-------
$69.61

All in all I got off pretty cheap. I spent three nights and three days in Vermont. I put my trusty Aero-bed to good use and avoided having to spend money on a hotel room. The three bedroom house was filled to the gills with 10 people but everyone was comfortable.

While I was away in Vermont my house was used to accommodate 3 out of town relatives celebrating in the Boston area. When I arrived home last night not only did I bring back left-overs from the Vermont Thanksgiving, but found my fridge filled with food and leftovers from my house guests. I also had a lovely gift basket from the body shop waiting for me as a thank-you. So with food and gift I feel like I am ahead for the weekend!

The American Farm Bureau reported the average cost of this year's feast for 10 is $36.78, a $1.10 price increase from last year's survey average of $35.68. I am not sure of the total cost of the Thanksgiving meal I had in Vermont but I am sure it was at least double the average. While we had only 10 people at the table, two of them were vegetarian so we had double dishes (two stuffings, two mashed potatoes, one tofurkey - you get the idea) for some items. We also cooked far too much food and despite eating leftovers on Friday night, still all took home food on Saturday. Not sure if the Farm Bureau takes into account left overs :)

    Only $2.40 in tolls to get from Boston to Vermont? That is great! It seems like every road in New England is a toll road; you did well!

    Arrgh. That sounds great.

    We flew to OK for the holiday - $1220 for 2 tx (!!), $130 in car service to and from the airport, $25 for the NYC bagels we brought, and $50 spending while we were there.

    We're thinking of driving next year...
